Biography
Jonathan is Director for Public Mental health and Consultant Psychiatrist at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation, Codirector of the Public Mental Health Implementation at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Public Mental Health Advisor to WHO Europe, Chair of the Public Mental Health Working Group at the World Psychiatric Association, and Honorary Professor of Public Mental Health at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He is involved in the development and implementation of local, national and international public mental health strategy. Jonathan teaches on public mental health to a range of groups including public health professionals, mental health professionals, master's students and commissioners.
Abstract
In his presentation, Jonathan will first outline the public health relevant impacts of mental disorder and wellbeing. He will then highlight the importance of identification of risk factors for mental disorder and protective factors for wellbeing as well how risk factors congregate in particular higher risk groups. He will summarise how public mental health interventions can be categorised and outline the implementation gap for such interventions, reasons and impacts. He will then outline actions to address the public mental health implementation gap which will result in broad public health relevant impacts.
